Underslopes

Underslopes are geomorphological features referring to the lower surface or zone on a slope where materials transported downslope accumulate or where the base contact between the slope and underlying strata is exposed. In many landscapes, the underslope forms a relatively gently inclined plane beneath a steeper upper slope, often consisting of colluvial deposits, talus, or weathered bedrock fragments.

Formation and characteristics: Underslopes develop as debris is eroded from the upper slope and deposited at the base, creating an apron or fan-like accumulation. They can be continuous or segmented along the slope and their geometry is shaped by rock strength, weathering, vegetation, and climate. Processes such as rockfall, landslides, debris flows, and slow soil creep contribute to the buildup of underslopes. In periglacial and alpine environments, underslopes may be influenced by frost action and meltwater, while in coastal settings they can form where wave action undercuts a cliff and deposits material downslope.

Contexts and implications: Underslopes occur in a variety of settings, including mountain talus slopes, river valleys with colluvial aprons, and coastal cliffs where subaerial erosion interacts with marine processes. The underslope surface can influence drainage patterns, groundwater storage, and slope stability, acting as a potential slip surface or a conduit for water flow. Their thickness and roughness affect how easily material can be re-mobilized during rain, seismic shaking, or thaw events.

Investigation and significance: Mapping underslopes with field surveys, topographic data, and remote sensing helps assess slope stability and hazards.
