Underindelningar

Underindelningar are subdivisions of a larger unit used to organize administration, planning, and data collection. The term is used in Swedish to refer to smaller units that lie within a parent unit, and it often implies a hierarchical structure where several levels exist within the same entity.

Common contexts for underindelningar include administrative geography, where a country or region is divided into counties or municipalities that can be subdivided further into districts, boroughs, or wards. In statistics, underindelningar enable data to be collected and analyzed at finer geographic granularity. In organizations, internal divisions such as departments, divisions, and teams function as underindelningar of the broader organization. In electoral systems, electoral districts or precincts act as underindelningar of larger constituencies.

Key characteristics are that underindelningar are typically officially defined by laws, regulations, or policy documents, and they are often nested so that the parent unit contains multiple subunits, which themselves may have sublevels.
