Undergroundstemmed

Undergroundstemmed is a botanical term used to describe plants whose stems develop primarily below the soil surface, functioning as storage and regrowth organs rather than as conspicuous above-ground shoots. These plants are adapted to survive adverse conditions such as drought, frost, or fire by preserving energy and meristematic tissue below ground.

The main forms of underground stems include rhizomes, tubers, bulbs, and corms. Rhizomes are horizontal stems that grow underground or at the soil surface and produce new shoots and roots at the nodes, enabling vegetative spread. Tubers are swollen storage organs that can arise from rhizomes or stolons and store carbohydrates; they often bear buds or eyes from which new shoots emerge. Bulbs are compact underground stems with highly specialized fleshy leaves or scales surrounding a small basal plate, providing both storage and a rudimentary shoot system. Corms are short, vertical, usually solid stems with a tunic-like wrapping, storing nutrients while supporting seasonal regrowth.

Growth and reproduction in undergroundstemmed plants combine storage with vegetative propagation and, in many species, a seasonal dormancy period. When conditions improve, the stored nutrients fuel rapid shoot and root development. Some species also reproduce clonally via divisions of the underground stems, contributing to local persistence and spread without seed dispersal.

Humans value undergroundstemmed plants for food crops, ornamentals, and hardy perennials. Examples include potatoes (tubers), onions and garlic (bulbs), and gladiolus or crocus (corms).
