Underdog

An underdog is a person or team that is generally expected to lose against a better-positioned opponent. The term emphasizes perceived disadvantage, such as weaker resources, lower status, or poorer past performance, while leaving room for unexpected outcomes. Underdogs can emerge in sports, politics, business, and social movements, and the label often depends on the observer’s perspective or the betting odds at a given time.

Originating in early 20th-century American sports and betting culture, the underdog is the counterpart of the top dog—the favored competitor with shorter odds. The metaphor extends from animal competitions and gambling to human endeavors and narrative fiction.

In media and storytelling, underdogs are common protagonists because their struggle invites audience sympathy and investment. Cinderella stories, scrappy teams overcoming deficits, consistent perseverance, and breakthrough victories are recurring motifs in literature, film, and journalism.

Socially, the underdog narrative can mobilize support, inspire perseverance, and highlight inequality. However, it can also oversimplify power dynamics, romanticize hardship, or excuse insufficient preparation. Critics note that the appeal often rests on selective framing of odds rather than objective fairness.

While not a universal trait, the idea of the underdog remains a durable social and cultural construct, used to describe real and imagined competitors whose chances appear slim but who still strive to prevail.
