Uncocked

Uncocked refers to a state or condition where something that is typically held under tension or is ready for activation has been released or disarmed. The term is most commonly associated with firearms. When a firearm is uncocked, its hammer or striker has been manually or automatically moved from a position that would allow it to propel a firing pin forward to discharge a round. This action renders the weapon safe from accidental firing and requires a deliberate secondary action to prepare it for discharge.

Beyond firearms, the concept of uncocked can apply to other mechanisms. For instance, a spring-loaded trap that has been set is in a cocked state. If the trap is triggered without catching prey or if it is manually disarmed, it is considered uncocked. Similarly, certain types of mechanical devices or toys might have a cocked position that stores energy. When this energy is released or the device is reset to its neutral or inactive state, it is effectively uncocked. The primary characteristic of being uncocked is the absence of stored potential energy that is ready for immediate release in a controlled manner.
