Approaches include physical methods such as excavation and off-site disposal, soil washing, and stabilization; chemical methods such as in-situ chemical oxidation or reduction and stabilization; biological methods such as bioremediation, phytoremediation, and bioaugmentation; and combined approaches including in-situ and ex-situ techniques and pump-and-treat systems for groundwater.

Process typically involves assessment, risk evaluation, remediation planning, implementation, and verification. Monitoring ensures that contaminant levels meet regulatory criteria. Stakeholders include government authorities, property owners, and environmental contractors. Costs, site-specific geology, contaminant type, and regulatory standards influence strategy.

Regulatory frameworks differ by country but generally require assessment of contamination, risk assessment, and approval of remediation plans. In Germany, terms related to soil protection and remediation are defined under the Soil Protection Act and related ordinances; in the EU, directives on soil and groundwater quality influence practice. Environmental cleanup may facilitate brownfield redevelopment and reduce long-term liabilities. Potential challenges include technical feasibility, cost, residual risk, and managing waste generated by remediation. Ongoing monitoring and post-remediation land use planning are common components.
