Umweltplaketten

Umweltplaketten, also known as environmental stickers or low-emission zone stickers, are a system implemented in Germany to restrict access to certain urban areas for vehicles that do not meet specific emission standards. These stickers are color-coded and indicate the level of particulate matter emissions a vehicle produces. Vehicles are classified into four categories based on their emission standards, with Category 1 being the highest polluting and Category 4 being the lowest.

The primary purpose of the Umweltplakette is to improve air quality in cities by reducing traffic pollution. Vehicles are only permitted to enter designated environmental zones (Umweltzonen) if they display the appropriate sticker corresponding to their emission category. The specific requirements for which sticker is needed can vary between different cities, but generally, the stricter the emission standards for a zone, the higher the sticker category required for entry.

To obtain an Umweltplakette, vehicle owners must present their vehicle registration documents to an official inspection center, such as TÜV or DEKRA, or to authorized workshops and municipal offices. The sticker is then issued based on the vehicle's Euro emission standard. Driving in an environmental zone without the correct sticker or driving a vehicle that does not meet the required emission standards can result in fines. The system aims to encourage the use of more environmentally friendly vehicles and reduce the impact of traffic on public health and the environment.
