Ultium

Ultium is General Motors’ battery technology platform for electric vehicles, introduced in 2020 as a flexible, scalable system intended to support a broad range of GM's EVs. It encompasses a family of large-format cells, modular modules, and a unified pack architecture designed to reduce cost, increase energy capacity, and enable common production across different vehicle types. Ultium is paired with the Ultium Drive propulsion systems to form a complete powertrain solution.

Technically, Ultium relies on pouch-style cells using a nickel-rich manganese-cobalt chemistry with a design emphasis on reducing cobalt content. The cells are arranged into modules and packs in a way that allows various configurations to fit different vehicle requirements. The platform is designed for an 800-volt electrical architecture, enabling high-performance fast charging and efficient power delivery. The modular, scalable design aims to simplify manufacturing and logistics by using common components across a wide range of vehicles.

Ultium Cells LLC, a joint venture between General Motors and LG Energy Solution, produces Ultium cells for North American use. The venture operates manufacturing sites in North America to supply GM’s EV lineup. Vehicles announced or released using Ultium technology include several GM models such as the Cadillac Lyriq, the GMC Hummer EV, and the Chevrolet Silverado EV, with ongoing expansion to additional platforms as GM broadens its electric offerings.

In context, Ultium is central to GM’s strategy to increase EV capacity while pursuing cost efficiencies and greater supply-chain resilience through domestic production. The platform aims to support a diverse vehicle portfolio and a long-term transition toward widespread electrification.
