Ukrajinka

Ukrajinka is a Ukrainian literary magazine that was established in 1860 in Lutsk, then part of the Russian Empire. The magazine was primarily dedicated to the spread of Ukrainian literature, folklore, and language. It was the first literary magazine in Ukraine that focused on the Ukrainian point of view.

The publication was notable for its mix of original literature, folklore, and translations from European languages. It introduced readers to the works of prominent Ukrainian writers such as Ivan Franko and Markiyan Shashkevych, as well as international authors like Byron and Pushkin. The magazine also featured articles on Ukrainian history, culture, and national revival.

Ukrajinka played a significant role in promoting the Ukrainian language and culture during the Russification period. Its efforts to preserve and disseminate Ukrainian heritage had a profound impact on the nation's literary scene. However, the magazine's duration was cut short due to the difficult political climate. In 1878, the Russian authorities suspended its publication, yet it managed to maintain its readership through private circulation.

A revived edition of the magazine emerged in 1933, during the Soviet era, with the aim of promoting Ukrainian literature and social realism. It was eventually closed down in 1936 due to perceived ideological deviations from the Soviet norm. Present-day Ukraine still honors the legacy of Ukrajinke, a testament to its commitment to upholding national identity and literary culture.
