Ubiegajcy

Ubiegajcy is a term in Polish used to denote individuals who seek, apply for, or contend for a benefit, position, or contract. It stems from the verb ubiegać się, meaning to strive for or to apply for. In standard usage, the noun form is ubiegacz (masculine) and ubiegaczka (feminine), referring to a person competing or applying, for example in a recruitment process, grant competition, or tender.

The present participle ubiegający się can also function as a descriptive predicate: ubiegający się o stypendium means a person applying for a scholarship. The nonstandard plural form ubiegajcy exists primarily in older or non-diacritic texts and is rare in contemporary Polish; modern texts would typically use ubiegacze or the phrases ubiegający się/ubiegający.

In legal and administrative texts, the term ubiegająca się o something often appears in formulations such as “uczestnik postępowania ubiegający się o…” or “wnioskodawca ubiegający się o grant.” While closely related terms include ubiegacz, wnioskodawca, oferent (in procurement contexts), and uczestnik postępowania.

Notes: The term emphasizes the act of seeking rather than the outcome; it is gendered in standard forms, with masculine and feminine variants. For most contemporary usages, ubiegacz or the periphrastic “osoba ubiegająca się o …” are preferred over the rare nonstandard form ubiegajcy.
