UV-säteily, Ultraviolet Radiation, is a form of electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths shorter than visible light but longer than X-rays. It is part of the electromagnetic spectrum emitted by the sun. UV radiation is commonly divided into three categories: UVA, UVB, and UVC, based on their wavelengths.

UVA rays have the longest wavelength and can penetrate the Earth's atmosphere. They contribute to skin aging, wrinkles, and play a role in skin cancer development. UVB rays have shorter wavelengths and are more energetic. They are the primary cause of sunburn and are also a significant factor in skin cancer. UVC rays have the shortest wavelengths and are the most energetic, but they are largely absorbed by the Earth's ozone layer and do not reach the surface.

Exposure to UV radiation can have both beneficial and harmful effects. The sun's UVB rays are essential for the body to produce vitamin D, which is crucial for bone health and immune function. However, excessive exposure to UV radiation, whether from the sun or artificial sources like tanning beds, can damage DNA in skin cells, leading to premature aging, eye damage such as cataracts, and increased risk of skin cancers, including melanoma. Protective measures like sunscreen, protective clothing, and avoiding peak sun hours are recommended to minimize harmful exposure.
