UVstabilizer

UV stabilizers are additives used to protect materials from degradation caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. They are widely employed in plastics and coatings, as well as textiles, wood coatings, and packaging, to extend service life and preserve appearance. UV stabilization functions by either absorbing UV energy, quenching reactive radicals, or reflecting or scattering UV light. The main categories are UV absorbers (light stabilizers) and hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS).

UV absorbers, such as benzotriazole and benzophenone derivatives, absorb UV photons and release the energy as low-level heat. HALS act indirectly by trapping and neutralizing radicals formed in the polymer during UV exposure, thereby slowing the chain scission that leads to embrittlement. Inorganic stabilizers include oxide pigments like TiO2 and ZnO, which provide UV shielding and can improve opacity or whiteness.

Applications include polyolefins, PVC, polycarbonate, and polyesters. They are used in automotive interiors and exteriors, packaging films, agricultural films, and paints/coatings. Performance depends on polymer matrix, coloring agents, processing temperature, and environment. Stabilizers can migrate to the surface, causing color changes or optical effects; compatibility and dispersion are critical. Typical loading ranges are from a few tenths of a percent to several percent by weight.

Limitations and considerations: choice of stabilizer balances UV protection, color stability, and mechanical properties. Some UV absorbers and HALS may pose safety or environmental concerns, requiring regulatory compliance and labeling; migration and weathering can alter effectiveness over time. Ongoing research seeks to improve efficiency, reduce migration, and develop eco-friendly UV stabilization solutions.
