UVstabiilsus refers to the resistance of a material to degradation caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. UV radiation, a component of sunlight, possesses enough energy to break chemical bonds within polymers and other organic materials. This breakage can lead to a variety of undesirable changes, collectively termed photodegradation.

Common manifestations of UV degradation include discoloration, often yellowing or fading, chalking where the surface develops a powdery residue, loss of mechanical strength, embrittlement, and cracking. These effects compromise the performance and aesthetic appeal of materials exposed to sunlight over time.

Materials susceptible to UV degradation include many plastics, paints, coatings, textiles, and even some natural products. The extent of degradation depends on factors such as the intensity and duration of UV exposure, the specific chemical composition of the material, and the presence of other environmental factors like heat and moisture.

To mitigate UV degradation, manufacturers incorporate UV stabilizers into their products. These stabilizers work through various mechanisms. Some absorb UV radiation and dissipate it as heat, effectively acting as a sunscreen for the material. Others scavenge free radicals generated by UV exposure, preventing them from initiating further degradation reactions. Antioxidants are also often used in conjunction with UV stabilizers to provide a more comprehensive protection system against environmental aging. The selection of appropriate UV stabilizers is crucial for ensuring the long-term durability of products intended for outdoor use or exposure to artificial UV sources.
