It is a dimensionless index intended to reflect the dose and rate of UVB exposure reaching living tissue or materials, incorporating spectral distribution, exposure duration, and protective factors.

Calculation typically involves integrating the spectral irradiance E(λ) over the UVB band (about 280–315 nm) with a biological weighting function w(λ) that approximates skin erythema response. The resulting dose is multiplied by exposure time, adjusted for geometry and shielding, and then normalized against a reference condition to yield the UVBalueilla value. Because UV sources vary, different standards may produce different numerical results.

Applications of UVBalueilla include architectural lighting planning to assess material aging and glazing needs, dermatological research to compare UVB burden from different light sources, and product testing for labeling or safety assessments. The metric is intended to complement, not replace, established indices such as the solar UV index and erythemal dose.
