USAfederal refers to the system of government in the United States of America. It is a federal republic, meaning that power is divided between a national government and individual state governments. The U.S. Constitution establishes the framework for this federal system, outlining the powers and responsibilities of each level of government.

The national government, also known as the federal government, is headquartered in Washington D.C. and is composed of three branches: the legislative, executive, and judicial. The legislative branch, Congress, is responsible for making laws. The executive branch, headed by the President, enforces laws. The judicial branch, led by the Supreme Court, interprets laws.

Each of the 50 states also has its own government, typically mirroring the federal structure with a governor, a legislature, and a court system. State governments have authority over matters not specifically delegated to the federal government, such as education, public safety, and intrastate commerce.

The balance of power between the federal government and the states is a core principle of American governance. This division of power allows for both national uniformity in certain areas and state-level flexibility to address local needs and preferences. Disputes over the division of powers are often resolved through the judicial system.
