UIQ

UIQ is a mobile device user interface built on the Symbian operating system. It provides a consistent graphical user interface and input framework across devices and was developed and licensed by UIQ Technology AB. In the 2000s, UIQ was used primarily on smartphones from Sony Ericsson and other manufacturers, offering touch-enabled navigation and integrated access to communications, messaging, and multimedia features.

History and development: UIQ originated as an alternative to Nokia's S60 for Symbian OS. Early devices in the UIQ lineup included the P-series family, which used the UIQ 2.x user interface. Around 2007, UIQ 3 introduced a redesigned, more touchscreen-centric experience, culminating in higher-end models from Sony Ericsson.

Technology and architecture: UIQ provided the GUI layer, application framework, and services atop Symbian OS. It exposed standard Symbian APIs to developers while styling the user experience. Later versions emphasized touch interaction and smooth navigation, integrating with Sony Ericsson's media, messaging, and productivity apps.
