UEFIohjelmistossa refers to a system's firmware implemented using the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) specification. UEFI is a modern replacement for the traditional Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) firmware found in older computers. It acts as the initial software that runs when a computer is powered on, responsible for initializing hardware components and then booting the operating system.

UEFI provides a standardized, modular, and extensible firmware interface. Key features include support for larger hard drives (beyond the 2TB limit of BIOS), faster boot times, enhanced security through features like Secure Boot, and a more user-friendly graphical interface for firmware settings. Unlike BIOS, UEFI can be written in C and has a more sophisticated boot manager.

When a computer is turned on, the UEFI firmware performs a Power-On Self-Test (POST) to check hardware. It then consults its boot manager to determine which operating system to load, often presenting a menu if multiple bootable options are available. UEFI allows for pre-OS environments and drivers, enabling more advanced functionalities before the main operating system loads. The transition from BIOS to UEFI has been a significant evolution in computer architecture, improving performance, security, and flexibility.
