UDPprotokollaa, also known as User Datagram Protocol, is a fundamental communication protocol used in computer networking. It operates at the transport layer of the Internet protocol suite, sitting alongside the more well-known Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). UDP is characterized by its speed and simplicity, making it ideal for applications where low latency is critical and occasional data loss is acceptable.

Unlike TCP, UDP is a connectionless protocol. This means it does not establish a persistent connection between sender and receiver before transmitting data. Instead, it sends datagrams, which are independent packets of data, without any prior handshake. This lack of overhead contributes to UDP's speed. However, it also means UDP does not guarantee delivery, order, or error checking of these datagrams. If a datagram is lost or corrupted during transmission, UDP itself does not attempt to retransmit it.

This makes UDP suitable for applications such as streaming media (video and audio), online gaming, and Domain Name System (DNS) lookups. In these scenarios, receiving slightly out-of-date or incomplete data is often preferable to the delay that would be introduced by TCP's reliability mechanisms. Applications that require guaranteed delivery and ordered data, such as web browsing (HTTP) or file transfer (FTP), typically use TCP. UDP's lightweight nature and efficiency have cemented its place as an essential component of the internet's infrastructure.
