Túlfeszültségvédelmi refers to the measures and devices used to protect electrical and electronic equipment from transient overvoltages. These overvoltages, often referred to as surges, are sudden, short-duration increases in voltage that can significantly exceed the normal operating levels. They can cause damage or complete failure of sensitive electronic components.

The primary sources of transient overvoltages are lightning strikes and switching operations within the power grid or within a building's electrical system. Lightning can induce massive voltage spikes directly or indirectly through the power lines. Switching operations, such as turning large motors on or off, can also create voltage transients due to the sudden interruption of current flow.

Túlfeszültségvédelmi devices, commonly known as surge protectors or surge suppressors, work by diverting excess voltage away from the protected equipment. They typically use components like Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) or gas discharge tubes that act as a temporary switch. When the voltage exceeds a certain threshold, these components become conductive and shunt the excess current to ground, preventing it from reaching the sensitive electronics.
