Tørkehendelser, often referred to as droughts, are prolonged periods of abnormally low rainfall, leading to a shortage of water. These events are natural phenomena that can occur in virtually any climate and can have significant impacts on ecosystems, agriculture, and human societies.

The causes of tørkehendelser are complex and can be attributed to a combination of meteorological, hydrological, and sometimes anthropogenic factors. Meteorologically, a lack of precipitation is the primary driver. This can be due to shifts in atmospheric circulation patterns, persistent high-pressure systems that block rain-bearing clouds, or El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events. Hydrologically, a drought is confirmed when the available water supply in rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and groundwater falls below normal levels. Reduced snowpack in mountainous regions can also contribute to water shortages in downstream areas during drier seasons.

The impacts of tørkehendelser are far-reaching. Ecologically, they can lead to wilting vegetation, increased risk of wildfires, and stress on wildlife populations due to a lack of water and food. Agriculturally, crop yields can be severely reduced, leading to economic losses for farmers and potential food shortages.
