These methods primarily address how the contractor is compensated for their work, how risks are allocated, and the level of detail provided in the project specifications at the time of bidding.

A common method is the lump sum contract, where the contractor agrees to complete the project for a fixed price. This method is suitable for projects with well-defined scopes and specifications, as it transfers the risk of cost overruns to the contractor. Design-build is a method where a single entity is responsible for both the design and construction of the project, streamlining the process and potentially reducing delivery time.
