Tömegcsillapító, which translates to mass damper in English, is a device designed to reduce vibrations in structures. These vibrations can arise from various sources, such as wind, earthquakes, or mechanical operations. A tömegcsillapító typically consists of a mass attached to a spring or a fluid system. When the structure begins to vibrate, the mass within the tömegcsillapító oscillates out of phase with the structure's movement. This counter-motion absorbs and dissipates the vibrational energy, thereby reducing the amplitude of the vibrations experienced by the main structure.
