Tömbépületek

Tömbépületek, or block buildings, are a common type of residential structure found primarily in Eastern Europe, particularly in cities that experienced rapid development during the socialist era. These buildings are characterized by their repetitive, modular design and often large scale. They were typically constructed using pre-fabricated concrete panels, which allowed for quick and efficient building processes to address housing shortages.

The typical tömbépület features a rectangular or elongated form, with multiple floors and a uniform facade. Balconies are a common feature, often arranged in a standardized pattern. The internal layout usually consists of a series of apartments of varying sizes, accessed by common stairwells and elevators. While functional and cost-effective to construct, the emphasis on mass production often resulted in a lack of architectural individuality and a somewhat monotonous urban landscape.
