Tímastimplun, often translated as time stamping, is the process of assigning a timestamp to a data record, such as a digital document or a transaction, to indicate the time and date at which it was created, modified, or processed. This timestamp serves as proof of the existence of the data at a specific point in time. In digital systems, time stamping is crucial for maintaining data integrity, audit trails, and establishing the order of events.

The implementation of time stamping can vary. In its simplest form, it might be a basic timestamp embedded within a file's metadata. More sophisticated methods involve trusted third-party time-stamping authorities (TSAs). These TSAs use secure cryptographic techniques to issue time stamps, ensuring their authenticity and integrity. When a user requests a time stamp for a document, they send a cryptographic hash of the document to the TSA. The TSA then combines this hash with the current time and signs it with its private key, creating a time-stamped token. This token can later be used to verify that the document existed at the time indicated by the TSA.

Time stamping has numerous applications. In legal contexts, it can be used to prove the exact time a contract was signed or a document was filed. In financial transactions, it ensures the accurate recording of when trades occurred. In digital forensics, it's essential for establishing the timeline of events. Blockchain technology also relies heavily on time stamping to order and secure transactions within blocks.
