Täytevalo

Täytevalo is a lighting concept used in photography, film and video to illuminate shadowed areas that are created by the main light, or päävalo. It is typically softer and less intense than the key light and is often placed on the opposite side of the subject from the key light or near the camera axis. The purpose is to achieve a more even exposure and preserve detail in darker areas of the scene.

Täytevalo can be produced with a separate light source fitted with diffusion, such as a softbox or umbrella, or by bouncing light off a reflector or a nearby surface. Its color temperature should match or be close to the key light to avoid visible color shifts. The exact intensity and distance depend on the desired contrast and the scene’s mood.

In practice, täytevalo helps control facial shadows and texture, allowing the viewer to see more detail without removing the sense of dimension created by the key light. When too strong, fill light can flatten features; when too weak, shadows may appear harsh. It is a standard component of three-point lighting, contributing to a natural and balanced look while maintaining control over the scene’s contrast.
