Tävyys

Tävyys is a term originating from Finnish folklore and mythology, often translated as "density" or "solidity" in a more abstract sense than its physical counterpart. It refers to a certain quality of being, an inherent substance or presence that gives an object or being its fundamental nature. This concept is not limited to physical matter but can also describe the essence of a spirit, a concept, or even an emotion.

In ancient Finnish beliefs, tävyys was considered a crucial attribute for things to possess genuine existence and power. An object with strong tävyys was believed to be more enduring, influential, and less susceptible to external forces. This applied to natural elements like ancient trees, stones, or rivers, as well as to mythical creatures and the very fabric of the spirit world. The concept implied a deep connection to the earth and a rootedness in reality, however that reality was perceived.

Understanding tävyys involves recognizing that it is more than just mass or volume. It is about the intrinsic 'is-ness' of something, its inherent, unchangeable core. This quality could be cultivated or inherited, and its presence or absence played a significant role in the perceived efficacy and importance of various entities within the traditional Finnish worldview. It speaks to a holistic understanding of existence, where the immaterial and the material are interconnected through shared qualities of substance and presence.
