Työturvallisuus, or occupational safety, refers to the conditions, policies, and practices designed to prevent work-related injuries, illnesses, and fatalities. It covers the identification of hazards, assessment of risks, and the implementation of preventive measures, including engineering controls, safe work procedures, personal protective equipment, and training. A strong työturvallisuus culture emphasizes reporting hazards and near-misses, ongoing supervision, and continual improvement of safety performance.

In Finland, the framework is defined by the Työturvallisuuslaki (Occupational Safety and Health Act) and related regulations. Employers bear primary responsibility to ensure a safe working environment: performing risk assessments, eliminating or reducing risks, providing appropriate training, supervision, and protective equipment, and maintaining equipment and facilities. Employees must comply with safety instructions and participate in safety activities. Incidents and occupational diseases are reported to the authorities, and investigations may be conducted to prevent recurrence.

National authorities and inspectors oversee compliance, offering guidance, conducting inspections, and enforcing penalties when violations occur. OSH practices are aligned with European Union directives that promote risk assessment, prevention, and the use of a systematic safety management approach. In practice, työturvallisuus involves cooperation across management, workers, and safety representatives to create safer workplaces in industries ranging from construction to services.
