This substance can be a liquid, a gas, or even a more complex mixture. The primary goal is to quantify the proportion of the available space or capacity that is occupied by the substance of interest.

In the context of porous materials, such as soils or rocks, saturation measurements are crucial for understanding fluid flow and storage properties. For example, in hydrogeology, the water saturation of a rock formation indicates how much of its pore volume is filled with water, which is directly related to its ability to transmit groundwater. Similarly, in the oil and gas industry, reservoir saturation determines the amount of hydrocarbons present and their accessibility for extraction.

The methods for performing saturation measurements vary depending on the material and the substance being measured. Techniques can range from simple gravimetric methods, where the mass difference before and after saturation is used to calculate the volume of the saturating substance, to more sophisticated spectroscopic or imaging techniques.
