This phenomenon is a crucial aspect of the nitrogen cycle and has significant implications for environmental sustainability and agricultural productivity. Nitrogen is an essential nutrient for plant growth, but its loss can lead to reduced crop yields and increased environmental pollution.

Several processes contribute to typpihäviö. Denitrification is a major pathway, where microorganisms convert nitrates in the soil into nitrogen gas (N2) or nitrous oxide (N2O), which then escape into the atmosphere. This process is favored in anaerobic (oxygen-poor) conditions, often found in waterlogged soils.
