Tworowed

Tworowed describes an object that has two parallel rows of units arranged along a central axis. In botany and agriculture, the term is used to indicate a dual-row morphology, such as a spike or inflorescence with two distinct rows of kernels or florets.

One well-known application is in barley, where varieties are classified as two-rowed or six-rowed according to kernel arrangement on the ear. Two-rowed barley has two orderly rows of kernels along the central spike; six-rowed barley lacks this simple two-row pattern and instead has six rows produced by fertile lateral spikelets. The choice between two-rowed and six-rowed types affects brewing and malting characteristics: two-rowed barleys are often valued for clean flavor and a high extract quality, while six-rowed barleys can provide higher yield and greater enzyme content in some brewing contexts.

In usage, the term is most commonly spelled two-rowed or two-row in formal writing. The single-word form tworowed appears occasionally in product names, informal writing, or branding, but it is uncommon in scientific or agronomic literature. Outside barley, tworowed can describe other plant structures that occur in two rows, though such usage is less standardized and tends to be taxon-specific.
