Tvåelektrodsceller, also known as two-electrode cells, are fundamental electrochemical devices consisting of two electrodes immersed in an electrolyte. These cells are commonly used in various scientific and industrial applications, including batteries, sensors, and corrosion studies. The principle of operation relies on the electrochemical reactions occurring at the electrode-electrolyte interfaces.

In a typical two-electrode cell, one electrode acts as the working electrode where the primary electrochemical process of interest takes place. The other electrode serves as the counter electrode, completing the electrical circuit and facilitating the flow of ions within the electrolyte. The electrolyte provides the medium for ion transport between the electrodes.

The behavior of a two-electrode cell is often characterized by its current-voltage (I-V) relationship. Applying a voltage across the electrodes drives electrochemical reactions. The resulting current is a measure of the reaction rate. Analyzing this relationship can reveal important information about the cell's properties, such as its resistance, capacitance, and the kinetics of the electrochemical reactions.

Two-electrode cells are simpler in design and operation compared to three-electrode cells, which include a reference electrode for precise potential control. This simplicity makes them suitable for applications where a detailed understanding of individual electrode potentials is not critical, or where cost and ease of use are paramount. However, without a reference electrode, the potential of the working electrode is not independently controlled and is influenced by the potential of the counter electrode and the cell's internal resistance. This can limit their use in highly sensitive electrochemical measurements.
