Tuulitörmäykset, also known as wind shear, refers to a sudden change in wind speed and/or direction over a short distance. This phenomenon can occur both horizontally and vertically, and it is a significant hazard in aviation. Pilots must be aware of wind shear because it can rapidly alter airspeed and altitude, potentially leading to a loss of control.

Wind shear can be caused by various atmospheric conditions. Microbursts, which are intense downdrafts from thunderstorms, are a particularly dangerous form of wind shear. Temperature inversions, where a layer of warm air sits above cooler air, can also create wind shear. Additionally, the air flow around buildings and terrain can generate localized wind shear.

The effects of wind shear on an aircraft depend on its direction and intensity. If an aircraft encounters a headwind that suddenly decreases, its airspeed will drop, potentially causing it to stall. Conversely, an increase in headwind can cause airspeed to rise rapidly. Downdrafts associated with wind shear can force an aircraft downwards, making it difficult to maintain altitude.

Aviation authorities have implemented various measures to mitigate the risks posed by wind shear. Aircraft are equipped with wind shear detection systems that alert pilots to its presence. Pilots receive specific training on how to recognize and recover from wind shear encounters. Air traffic control also plays a role by providing advisories about suspected or reported wind shear conditions. Understanding and respecting wind shear is crucial for flight safety.
