Tutkatyypit

Tutkatyypit refers to the classification of radar systems based on their operational principles, design, and intended applications. Understanding these types is crucial for comprehending radar's diverse capabilities.

One primary distinction is between pulsed and continuous wave (CW) radars. Pulsed radars transmit short bursts of electromagnetic energy and measure the time it takes for the echo to return, which determines range. CW radars transmit a continuous signal and detect frequency shifts (Doppler effect) to measure velocity, often used for speed detection.

Another categorization is based on scanning mechanism. Mechanically scanned radars use a physical antenna that rotates or moves to cover an area. Phased array radars, in contrast, electronically steer the beam by manipulating the phase of signals emitted from an array of antenna elements, allowing for much faster scanning and multiple target tracking.

Radars can also be classified by their operating frequency band, such as L-band, S-band, X-band, or Ka-band, each offering different trade-offs in terms of resolution, range, and atmospheric penetration. Applications also define types, including weather radar, air traffic control radar, military surveillance radar, and automotive radar, each optimized for specific environmental conditions and detection requirements. Finally, monostatic and bistatic radars differ in their antenna configurations, with monostatic radars using a single antenna for both transmission and reception, while bistatic radars employ separate transmitting and receiving antennas.
