Turbomolekulaarsed

Turbomolekulaarsed is Estonian term used to describe phenomena, devices or systems that involve very rapid molecular motion or momentum transfer at high rotational speeds. The word combines turbo- with molekulaarsed, reflecting a focus on fast, gas-phase molecular dynamics or mechanical rotors that influence molecular motion.

In vacuum technology, turbomolekulaarsed pumbad (turbomolecular pumps) are a primary example. They rely on rapidly rotating blades to impart momentum to gas molecules, directing them away from the pumped chamber toward the backing pump. This creates and maintains low pressures required for techniques such as electron microscopy, surface analysis, and semiconductor processing. Turbomolecular pumps are typically used in conjunction with backing pumps and are valued for their ability to achieve high and ultra-high vacuum levels, with performance strongly dependent on rotor speed, blade design, and system temperature.

In physical chemistry and molecular physics, turbomolekulaarsed effects describe processes where fast rotational states and collisions influence energy transfer, relaxation, or reaction dynamics in gases and molecular beams.
