Tuottopalkkiot, also known as performance fees or incentive fees, are a type of remuneration often paid to investment fund managers or other financial service providers. They are designed to align the interests of the provider with those of their clients or investors. The core principle is that the provider receives a portion of the profits generated above a certain benchmark or hurdle rate. This means that the provider only earns the tuottopalkkio if the investment performs exceptionally well, thus sharing in the success.

The calculation of tuottopalkkiot can vary significantly depending on the fund or agreement. Commonly, a baseline performance level is established, which could be a fixed percentage, a market index (like the OMX Helsinki 25), or a previous performance high. If the investment's return exceeds this baseline, a pre-agreed percentage of that excess return is paid as the tuottopalkkio. These fees are typically charged annually but can sometimes be calculated over longer periods.

Tuottopalkkiot are a common feature in hedge funds and some alternative investment strategies, but they are also increasingly found in more traditional asset management. The intention is to incentivize managers to seek out superior returns, as their compensation is directly linked to their success in doing so. However, critics sometimes argue that performance fees can encourage excessive risk-taking by managers desperate to achieve high returns and earn their bonus.
