Tummentumaa, also known as "hidden forest" or "secret woods," refers to a phenomenon observed in certain regions of Finland, particularly in the northern and central parts of the country. The term describes areas where the forest appears to vanish or become obscured when viewed from a distance, creating an optical illusion. This effect is often attributed to the dense, uniform growth of pine and spruce trees, which can make the forest floor and surrounding landscape blend seamlessly into the horizon.

The illusion is most noticeable during the summer months when the trees are lush and green, and the light conditions are consistent. From a distance, the forest may appear as a solid, unbroken wall of greenery, with little to no distinction between the treetops and the sky.
