Tulpat

Tulpat is a perennial flowering plant described from the montane woodlands of the fictional region of Veridia. It belongs to the genus Tulpatia in the family Asteraceae. The species is valued for its bright inflorescences and its role in local pollinator networks. In Veridian gardens it is commonly grown as an ornamental and can form the focal point of borders or woodland plantings.

Morphology and flowers: Tulpat typically reaches 40 to 70 cm in height. It has an erect stem with lanceolate leaves arranged alternately along the stem. The inflorescence is a composite flower head consisting of 8 to 14 golden-yellow ray florets surrounding a central disk of darker florets. Flowering occurs from late spring to early summer, with sustained bloom in temperate conditions. The plant produces a single to few heads per leafy branch and has a robust, long-lasting display.

Habitat and ecology: In its native range, Tulpat favors moist, well-drained loamy soils in shaded to partially sunny montane environments, at elevations around 1,000 to 2,000 meters. It is pollinated by bees, butterflies, and hoverflies, and its seeds are dispersed by wind aided by a light, cottony pappus. The species is generally resilient to moderate drought once established but prefers regular moisture during early growth.

Taxonomy and etymology: The genus Tulpatia is placed in the tribe Astereae within Asteraceae. The epithet veridiana reflects its Veridian origin. The common name Tulpat is said to derive from a Veridian word meaning “sun cup,” in reference to the shape of the flower head.

Cultivation and uses: Tulpat is grown as an ornamental plant in temperate gardens and is propagated by seed or division in spring. It requires full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil; regular watering during establishment supports growth and flowering. In Veridia, parts of the plant are used in ceremonial dyes and as a source of seasonal bloom.
