Tulivuorenpurkauspyörteet, a Finnish term, refers to volcanic eruption vortices. These are atmospheric phenomena that can occur during significant volcanic eruptions, particularly those involving explosive releases of ash and gas. When a large volume of hot, buoyant material is ejected vertically into the atmosphere, it can interact with surrounding air currents, leading to the formation of rotating columns or whirls. These vortices are essentially miniature tornadoes or dust devils, but powered by the heat and energy of the volcanic plume.

The formation of these vortices is driven by the rapid ascent of superheated volcanic gases and ash. As this material rises, it draws in cooler surrounding air, creating a swirling motion. The intensity of the vortex depends on factors such as the magnitude of the eruption, the atmospheric conditions, and the stability of the volcanic plume. While often visually striking, tulivuorenpurkauspyörteet are generally localized and short-lived, dissipating as the eruption wanes or the plume loses its thermal energy.
