Tsquare

Tsquare is a term that may refer to the drafting instrument commonly called a T-square. In standard terminology, a T-square is a rigid straightedge mounted on a perpendicular stock, forming a fixed right angle. It serves as a guide to draw horizontal lines and as a reference edge for other drawing tools. Some sources or brands may spell it as Tsquare, but the essential tool is the same.

The blade of the T-square is a long, straight edge used to strike or guide lines, while the stock (the perpendicular head) rests against the edge of a drawing board to keep the blade square to the edge. By keeping the stock against the board, draftsmen can create precise, parallel lines and establish a reliable baseline for other instruments such as triangles and compasses.

In practice, the drawing paper is secured to a drafting board, and the T-square’s stock sits flat against the edge to ensure straight, repeatable lines. It is widely used in architectural, engineering, and graphic design drawing to lay out plans, sections, and details. The instrument is typically used in conjunction with drawing triangles, dividers, and scales to construct accurate layouts.

Materials and sizes vary. Traditional T-squares use a wooden stock with a metal or wooden blade, while modern versions may employ aluminum or composite materials. Sizes commonly range from small 8- to 12-inch models for tabletop work up to 24, 36, or larger inches for full-size boards, with larger formats common in architectural practice.
