It is hypothesized to originate from a hypothetical exoplanet with a dense atmosphere and low gravity. The name "Trägermannigfa" itself is a portmanteau, often interpreted as combining elements suggesting "lazy" or "slow" (Trägermann) and "manifold" or "diverse" (manigfa), alluding to its purported slow growth and complex, branching structure.

The plant is characterized by a series of interconnected, buoyant gas bladders that allow it to float or drift within its native atmospheric environment. These bladders are typically filled with a lighter-than-air gas produced through internal biological processes.
