Trollibussid

Trollibussid, often referred to as trolleybuses, are electric buses that draw their power from overhead wires. They are a type of electric public transport and are distinct from trams and trains in that they run on rubber tires and are steered like a conventional bus. Trolleybuses operate on streets alongside other traffic, although they may have dedicated lanes in some cities.

The system typically involves two overhead wires, one positive and one negative, which the trolleybus connects to using long poles called trolleys. These poles are articulated and can move to follow the vehicle's steering. Unlike battery-electric buses, trolleybuses are not limited by battery range and can operate continuously as long as there is a power supply. This makes them suitable for longer routes and for cities with existing overhead infrastructure.

Trolleybus systems have been in operation for over a century, with early examples appearing in the late 19th century. They gained popularity in the mid-20th century as a cleaner alternative to internal combustion engine buses. While some cities have phased out their trolleybus networks in favor of other transport modes, many still operate and are often considered an efficient and environmentally friendly option, especially where electricity is generated from renewable sources. Modern trolleybuses often incorporate battery systems, allowing them to travel short distances away from the overhead wires, providing greater operational flexibility.
