Trockenstiften

Trockenstiften, a German term, translates to "dry points" or "dry pens." In the context of art and writing, it refers to techniques that utilize dry drawing media. This can encompass a variety of materials such as graphite pencils, charcoal, pastels, crayons, and colored pencils. The fundamental characteristic is the absence of liquid binders or carriers, meaning the pigment is applied directly to the surface in a solid or powdery form.

Drypoint etching is a specific printmaking technique that also shares the "Trockenstiften" concept. In drypoint, an image is incised directly into a metal plate using a sharp, pointed tool called a burin. The act of scratching creates a groove, and the displaced metal, called burr, is left on the surface. When ink is applied and wiped, the burr holds excess ink, resulting in soft, velvety lines in the printed image. This contrasts with other intaglio techniques like engraving, where the metal is cleanly removed. The unique texture achieved through the burr is the hallmark of drypoint.

The term "Trockenstiften" broadly encompasses the direct application of dry pigment for artistic expression, whether in drawing or printmaking, emphasizing the lack of liquid mediums in the initial application.
