Triwizard

The Triwizard Tournament is an international magical competition among three wizarding schools: Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the United Kingdom, Beauxbatons Academy of Magic in France, and Durmstrang Institute in Northern Europe. Created to foster international cooperation and challenge young wizards and witches, the event tests courage, skill, and resourcefulness through a series of demanding tasks.

The tournament is organized under the auspices of the International Confederation of Wizards and is held irregularly, with the host school rotating among the three participants. Eligibility is determined by a process involving the Goblet of Fire, a magical selection device that invites qualified students to submit their names. Each participating school may enter one champion, typically a student in good standing who is of appropriate age.

Format and tasks: The competition comprises three challenging tasks, designed to test different aspects of magical ability and endurance. The first task typically involves facing a dragon to retrieve a prized item. The second task requires rescuing someone valuable from a hazardous setting, such as the depths of a lake. The final task is a grueling maze filled with magical obstacles leading to the Triwizard Cup, which serves as the ultimate prize and, in some editions, a means of return.

Notable edition: The most detailed canonical instance occurred at Hogwarts in 1994–1995. Champions were Cedric Diggory (Hogwarts), Fleur Delacour (Beauxbatons), and Viktor Krum (Durmstrang). The event culminated in the Cup becoming a Portkey, transporting the champions to a graveyard where Cedric Diggory was killed, and Harry Potter survived. The outcome and tragedy had lasting repercussions, and the tournament has not been repeatedly held in the subsequent years described in the canon.
