The term *sakkarittir* refers to the Tamil month of *Margazhi* (December–January), during which the festival is primarily observed. The name *trisakkarittir* suggests that the festival spans three consecutive *sakkarittir* months, though its exact origins and significance vary by region and community.

The festival is deeply rooted in agricultural and cultural traditions, often marking the end of the harvest season and the onset of the cooler winter months. It is commonly associated with the worship of deities such as Murugan (the Tamil god of war and victory) and, in some contexts, the goddess Mariamman, who is invoked for protection against diseases and misfortune. Devotees perform rituals, including the lighting of lamps (*deepam*), offering prayers, and participating in processions. In certain villages, especially those with Murugan temples, the festival may coincide with the *Thai Poosam* celebrations, though it retains distinct local customs.

Trisakkarittir is also linked to folk traditions, including the performance of *bharatanatyam* dances, storytelling, and the preparation of special dishes like *sundal* (spiced legume salad) and *payasam* (sweet pudding). Some communities observe the festival as a time for family gatherings, where elders share wisdom and blessings with younger generations.
