Triphenyyliisilaani

Triphenyyliisilaani, usually called triphenylsilane (chemical formula C18H16Si; also written Ph3SiH), is an organosilicon compound in which silicon is bonded to three phenyl groups and a hydrogen atom. The molecule belongs to the class of silanes and is used as a building block in organic and silicone chemistry.

Synthesis and occurrence: Common laboratory routes include the chemical reduction of chlorotriphenylsilane (Ph3SiCl) with hydride donors such as lithium aluminium hydride, or hydrosilylation-related methods that yield the Si–H compound. Triphenylsilane can also be prepared as a byproduct of certain organosilicon coupling reactions.

Physical properties: Triphenylsilane is typically a colorless solid at room temperature with low volatility. It is relatively stable under ordinary conditions but reacts with strong oxidizers or moisture. The Si–H bond in Ph3SiH is moderately reactive in catalytic or radical reactions, enabling its role as a hydride source in some transformations.

Applications: In organic synthesis and materials science, triphenylsilane serves as a versatile building block for preparing other silanes and organosilicon compounds. It is used as a precursor to more complex silicon-containing molecules and as a hydride donor in certain catalytic reductions and hydrofunctionalization reactions.
