Trennbarpräfigierten, or separable prefixes, are a characteristic feature of the German language. They are prefixes that can detach from the verb and appear at the end of a sentence or clause in certain grammatical constructions. This phenomenon is primarily observed in the present and simple past tenses, as well as in subordinate clauses where the prefix remains attached to the verb.

The meaning of a verb can often change significantly when a separable prefix is added. For example, the verb "sehen" means "to see," but "aussehen" means "to look" or "to appear." Similarly, "nehmen" (to take) becomes "mitnehmen" (to take along). There are a limited number of common separable prefixes, including "ab-," "an-," "auf-," "aus-," "ein-," "her-," "hin-," "los-," "mit-," "nach-," "vor-," "weg-," "zu-," and "zurück-."

The grammatical rule for separating prefixes is that when a separable prefix verb is in the main clause of a sentence in the present or simple past tense, the prefix moves to the end of the clause. For instance, "Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf" (I get up at seven o'clock) is constructed with "aufstehen" (to get up), where "auf" is separated and placed at the end. In contrast, in subordinate clauses, or with modal verbs, the prefix remains attached: "Ich weiß nicht, wann er aufsteht" (I don't know when he gets up). Understanding separable prefixes is crucial for mastering German grammar and comprehension.
