Transportstroom

Transportstroom is a concept used in urban planning, transport engineering, and logistics to describe the movement of people and goods through transportation networks. The term covers the flow of traffic as well as the underlying demand for travel and the capacity of the network to accommodate it. In practice, transportstroom refers to how origin–destination movements are translated into observed movements on a network, and how congestions and delays emerge from the interaction of demand and supply.

Components: transport demand includes trip generation, distribution, and mode choice. Transport supply encompasses network capacity, infrastructure quality, and service frequency. The actual transport flow is the resulting movement on network links, often measured in vehicles per hour, tonne-kilometers, or passenger-kilometers, and analyzed via indicators such as average speed, travel time, and level of service.

Measurement and methods: data sources include traffic counts, travel surveys, fare data, and sensors. Modeling approaches range from macroscopic traffic flow models (flow-density-speed relations) to microscopic simulations and EMS network optimization. Multimodal models integrate road, rail, maritime, and air transport.

Applications: planners use transportstroom analysis to design congestion management, optimize public transport, plan freight corridors, and assess policy impacts such as pricing, land-use change, or decarbonization strategies. The concept also supports resilience planning by examining how disruptions affect flows.
