Transportproteinet

Transportproteinet refers to a broad class of membrane proteins that mediate the movement of ions, water, and small molecules across biological membranes. They are essential for cellular homeostasis, nutrient uptake, and signal transduction. Most transportproteinet are integral membrane proteins containing hydrophobic regions that span the lipid bilayer. They recognize specific substrates and switch between conformations to move substrates from one side of the membrane to the other. Transportproteinet are commonly categorized by mechanism into channels, carriers (transporters), and pumps.

Channels form pores that selectively permit rapid passage of ions or water along an electrochemical gradient (passive transport). Carrier proteins undergo conformational changes to shuttle substrates across the membrane; they may do so passively (facilitated diffusion) or actively when powered by energy. Primary active transport uses ATP directly (for example Na+/K+-ATPase, Ca2+-ATPase, H+-ATPase). Secondary active transport uses energy stored in ion gradients created by primary pumps to transport another substrate, often in symport or antiport arrangements (e.g., SGLT1 with Na+, or Na+/Ca2+ exchanger).

Physiological examples include glucose transporters (GLUT family), water channels (aquaporins), and various ion channels. Transportproteinet contribute to tissue-specific processes such as intestinal absorption, renal reabsorption, neural signaling, and vesicular trafficking. Mutations or malfunctions in transportproteinet can lead to disease and affect drug disposition.

In pharmacology, transporter proteins influence absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of drugs, and may contribute to multidrug resistance. Families such as the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters and the solute carrier (SLC) transporters encompass many clinically important members, including P-glycoprotein (MDR1) and various glucose, amino acid, and drug transporters.
