Transmissionsfabrikken

Transmissionsfabrikken is a Danish engineering facility that designs, manufactures and tests automotive transmissions and related driveline components. Located in Denmark, the plant has historically produced manual and automatic transmissions for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, as well as gear sets, housings and electronic control modules.

The facility traces its origins to the mid-20th century when regional machine shops established a dedicated gearbox workshop to support local automakers. Over the decades it expanded capacity and product scope, adding automated production lines in the 1980s and moving to more advanced precision manufacturing in the 1990s. It entered joint ventures and later became part of a multinational supplier network, adapting to shifts in global driveline technology and evolving control systems.

The plant produces a range of transmissions, including manual, automated manual and traditional automatic transmissions, as well as related components such as gear sets, clutches and testing equipment. Its testing facilities simulate real-world drivetrain loads to verify performance and durability.

At its peak the site employed several thousand people and was a significant contributor to regional manufacturing activity. In recent years, the operation has focused on modernization, lean production, and expansion of high-precision machining and assembly capabilities to serve regional OEMs as well as aftermarket customers. As the automotive industry moves toward electrified drivetrains, Transmissionsfabrikken has pursued product development and service models designed to support hybrid and electric powertrain components.

Transmissionsfabrikken remains active as a regional supplier of driveline components and as a training venue for engineering apprentices and skilled trades. It is often cited as an example of mid-sized Nordic manufacturing adapting to global competition and technological change.
