Translitteroituna

Translitteroituna is a Finnish term that describes text that has been transliterated from one writing system to another, rather than translated into another language. It emphasizes the representation of the source script’s graphemes in a target script, typically following a defined transliteration scheme rather than aiming for phonetic accuracy.

In transliteration, the goal is to map characters from the source script to corresponding characters in the target script while preserving the original inventory and sequence of letters. This differs from transcription, which seeks to reproduce pronunciation. Transliteration is often reversible when a consistent scheme is used, though some scripts and schemes introduce ambiguities or require diacritics that may be omitted in ordinary text.

Standards and schemes vary by language family. Common examples include ISO 9 for Cyrillic scripts, ALA-LC romanization for Arabic, Hepburn or Kunrei-shiki for Japanese, and various Greek or Devanagari transliteration conventions. Real-world usage appears in library catalogs, digital archives, and cross-language search systems, where translitteroituna text enables indexing and retrieval across scripts (for example, Москва rendered as Moskva, 東京 as Tōkyō, or Αθήνα as Athína).
